When it comes to bedroom storage, there is a big difference between "somewhere to put your clothes" and a beautifully designed space that makes getting ready a pleasure.
Many homeowners face the same frustration: a bedroom dominated by a dated, clunky wardrobe that feels more like an obstacle than a feature. The goal wasn't just a new cupboard, it was a bespoke sanctuary .For this project, the goal was to replace an awkward storage area with a bespoke sanctuary. Here is how we transformed a tired sliding wardrobe into a modern L-shaped feature.
The Problem: Clunky Tracks and Wasted potential
The Solution: A Bespoke L-Shaped Shaker Wardrobe
Before: The heavy oak-style sliding doors felt dated and did not make the best use of the room’s footprint.
The original setup featured older, oak-style sliding doors. While sliding doors can save space, older track systems often become stiff or noisy over time.
More importantly, the design felt heavy in the room and the interior layout did not work for the client’s needs. They wanted something fresh, modern and completely tailored to how they actually use the space.

After: A seamless floor to ceiling fit featuring a classic Shaker profile.
We stripped out the old framework and designed a custom L-shaped run of fitted wardrobes. By optimising the corner, we increased the storage capacity without taking up more floor space in the bedroom.floor to ceiling fit featuring a classic Shaker profile.
Key Design Features of this Build:
Floor to Ceiling: By building the cabinetry right up to the ceiling, we removed the "dust gap" and created a truly seamless look.
Timeless Shaker Doors:We used a classic Shaker panel design finished in a soft grey. This brightened the room and provided a higher quality feel than the old flat oak panels.
Strategic Mirrors: To ensure the L-shaped corner did not feel dark, we integrated full-length mirrors into the end doors. This bounces natural light around the room and provides a perfect full-length view for getting dressed.

The Finishing Touch: Premium Hardware
At Corbett Carpentry, we know that hardware defines the final result. A high-quality cabinet needs handles that feel substantial.
For this project, the client chose elongated T-bar handles with a knurled texture and an antique finish. The heavy, tactile grip of these handles provides a premium feel every time a door is opened.

FAQ'S: Bespoke Wardrobes for Small Spaces
1. Can a bespoke wardrobe really make my small room feel bigger? Yes! Unlike freestanding wardrobes that leave "dead space" above and to the sides, a bespoke wardrobe is built floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall. This creates a seamless, "hidden" look that draws the eye upward, making the ceiling feel higher and the room less cluttered.
2. My room has awkward alcoves and sloped ceilings. Can you still fit a wardrobe? Absolutely. This is where bespoke carpentry shines. We scribe and shape our frames to fit the exact contours of your walls, whether you have a Victorian chimney breast, a loft conversion with sharp angles, or uneven floors. We turn "useless" corners into high-capacity storage.
3. Which is better for a small room: sliding or hinged doors? Sliding doors are the ultimate space-savers because they don’t require "swing space," meaning you can place your bed closer to the wardrobe. However, if you prefer a traditional look, hinged doors can still work in small rooms if we design the internal layout to ensure you can access everything easily.
4. How deep does a small-space wardrobe need to be? Standard wardrobes are usually 600mm deep to accommodate hanging coats. In very tight spaces, we can design "shallow" wardrobes (approx. 400mm–450mm) using pull-out "front-facing" rails or focusing on shelving and drawers instead.
5. Should I choose mirrored doors for a small bedroom? Mirrored doors are highly recommended for small spaces. They reflect natural light and create the optical illusion of doubling the room’s footprint. It also removes the need for a separate floor-standing mirror, saving even more floor space.
6. Can I customise the inside of the wardrobe? Yes, every centimetre is planned around you. For small spaces, we often recommend "double hanging" (two rails, one above the other) for shorter items like shirts and trousers, and integrated shoe racks or pull-out drawers to keep the floor clear of clutter.
7. How long does the installation take, and will it be messy? Most small-space installations are completed within 1–3 days. We manufacture as much as possible in our workshop to minimise the time spent in your home. We use dust extraction tools and protective floor coverings to ensure your room is left spotless.
8. Does a bespoke wardrobe add value to my home? High-quality, built-in storage is a major selling point for UK buyers, especially in smaller properties where storage is at a premium. It’s widely considered an investment that increases both the functionality and the resale value of a home.
9.Which areas do you serve? Based at our workshop in Finchampstead (RG40), we provide a dedicated local service to clients within a 30-minute radius. This area covers the heart of the Thames Valley, including:
